Peaks Youth Hockey League
Frequently Asked Questions
My child wants to play hockey. Where do I start?
Skating is the foundation of hockey. We have a Learn to Skate and Learn to Play program that will give them the basics in skating and hockey to then get them ready to register for the season. You will learn the basics of starting and stopping and even how to properly get up after you fall.
How long does the season go?
A typical hockey season goes from October to March. Practices will be once a week and games are every weekend for our 10/12/14U+ players and every other weekend for our 6U and 8U players.
How do I register my child for the hockey program?
Registration sign-ups will be sent out and posted on our website in August, we will send an email out to all of the attendees of our Learn to Play program and previous players.
What are hockey evaluations for?
We have evaluations for players so we can assess the skills of the player, this allows us to ensure fair competition for games.
Evaluations being in September and then teams will be organized.
Do I need to buy my player's jersey?
We provide the team jersey in your season fees, and they will be handed out before the beginning of the season.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A RECREATIONAL HOCKEY PROGRAM VS TRAVEL HOCKEY PROGRAM?
House/rec hockey leagues offer a welcoming and inclusive environment that is perfect for children who are new to the game or for anyone looking to have a fun-filled hockey experience. This league provides an excellent option for players of all skill levels, guaranteeing a more affordable atmosphere. Convenience is key, as these local leagues prioritize nearby rinks over distant venues. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player looking for an enjoyable experience, this league provides the perfect setting to meet new friends and build lasting connections.
Travel hockey leagues cater to skilled players who crave a higher level of competition. Keep in mind, however, that participation in travel leagues often comes at a higher cost compared to local leagues. This is primarily due to the increased travel expenses and the need for personalized gear.
How can I volunteer to be a coach?
You can contact Megan Ostler at meostler@provo.org for more information on coaching a team.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO PREPARE MY CHILD FOR THE HOCKEY SEASON?
We have “Stick Time” available for you and your player, we also have private coaches for further hockey instruction. You will need to reserve your spot for Stick Time on the Mind Body app through Provo Rec Center website.
